Thoughts on the Movie
Widely credited with launching the Alt.Porn movement, Eon McKai’s vision of pornography as art rather than just disposable thrills has garnered him significant exposure in both adult and mainstream media.
In an industry defined by a high volume of formulaic releases, Eon McKai is an anomaly. Educated at the California Institute of the Arts and holding a Masters Degree in Film and Video, his resume reads more like that of a struggling indie filmmaker than the trailblazing pornographer he is.
Taking inspiration from arthouse cinema, old-school erotica and his own experience in the East LA hardcore scene, McKai has spent time and a great deal of effort crafting a story of deceit which crackles with originality and intensity.
It is worth noting at this point that Girls Lie is not your conventional fuck-flick. The girls are less like porn stars, and more like the sort you’d see hanging at that hip record store or coffee house. Tattooed, pierced, and more than a little disaffected, they act their roles so convincingly you’d swear you were watching their real lives.
Girls Lie features eight scenes of scorching hot sex, but is not sexy by porn standards. With Girls Lie, it’s the things you least expect that turn you on – like Charlotte Stokely riding her bicycle in the blazing summer sun with her black and white houndstooth skirt hitched up. Or Dana DeArmond walking barefoot on a polished wooden floor. Or even Riley Mason taking off her nailpolish. This unexpected sexy is what makes Girls Lie so engaging – you never know where the next thrill is going to come from.
But more about the sex, right? Girls Lie has it in spades – from Charlotte Stokely taking a gay man on his first trip into Pussytown, to Pixie Pearl’s nighttime interracial fuck in the skeleton of a house, to Dana DeArmond fucking her husband at the foot of the staircase, the sex is sizzling and more than a little bit dirty.
Most interesting by far is Riley Mason’s tryst with Adult legend Tom Byron. Riley tells her Midwest boyfriend she’s heading out to LA to shoot some photos for a catalogue, but when she gets there we find out she’s actually a porn star, and it’s time for her scene.
Shot as if you’re watching through the on-set monitor, this scene switches back and forth between “porn time” and “real time” as we watch Riley’s shoot in stop-start motion. She turns in one of the hottest performances of the film as she takes Byron in doggy and then a revealing reverse cowgirl.
The kicker, though, is that this is also one of the most uncomfortable scenes in the film. We’ve already watched her lie to her boyfriend, but while she’s turning it on for the camera, and for Byron, we can feel her guilt coming at us in waves. What is this? A porn film where you actually become invested in the characters? Could it be?
It is, and this is the magic of Girls Lie. From the very first establishing shot to the final frame, and with the blistering hot sex in between, this movie is compelling. It beckons seductively, enticing you to watch. And to watch is to become completely immersed. Every scene, every shot has been crafted with a filmmakers eye for detail, and each scene is more intense than the last.
A word of warning – if you’re after long scenes of double penetration, acrobatic anal and women performing extreme sex acts on a multitude of men you won’t find it in Girls Lie. But if you’re prepared to let a porn flick take you on a sexy, revealing ride into the lives of four girls, then you may find that Girls Lie will become your new favourite movie.
Thoughts on the DVD
This is a two disc set with the feature on Disc One and some interesting bonus features on Disc Two. The Behind The Scenes is an entertaining watch, as is the "We Weren't Welcome" mini-feature. Don't miss the Dana DeArmond bonus scene, and trailers for Skater Girl Fever, The ReBelle Rousers and Dana DeArmond Does The Internet!
